The Great Cane Toad Bust is Australia’s biggest toad-busting event, an annual week-long effort coordinated by Watergum, the Gold Coast community conservation organisation. It mobilises families, schools, landholders and local groups to humanely remove cane toads, one of Australia’s most damaging invasive species.
Cane toads are toxic at every life stage and breed prolifically, taking a heavy toll on native wildlife. The Great Cane Toad Bust pairs tadpole trapping by day with toad busting by night, giving communities a practical way to reduce local toad numbers and create safer habitat for native species.
Nicolas documented the event for Watergum, capturing the volunteers, the work in the field and the community effort behind one of the country’s largest citizen science initiatives.
